DREW MCRAE

Born and raised in New Zealand's North Island, Drew McRae's vibrant landscapes roll from rocky coastline to coarse grassland, inspired as much by the sun-soaked ocean as the overcast sky.
Self-taught, McRae discovered his interest in visual art as a child, sketching cartoons at school while his teachers talked about less interesting things. He soon discovered a passion for landscapes, expanding his practice to include oils, pastels, and acrylics. From there, he has built a body of work focused on representing the landscapes around him in all their changing movements and moods.
McRae lives in Auckland with his family where his passion for long-distance running allows him to spend time amongst the nature he depicts. When he isn't painting or running, McRae can be found gardening or making music.
McRae draws inspiration from the rhythm of the environment. His paintings embody this through the motion and texture of his mixed media approach, focusing on layers, body, and complex brush work.
He now primarily works with acrylic and pastel on paper and canvas. This affords the quick, multi-textured results he uses to represent dynamic, varied landscapes. He usually works on location, painting his subject matter in person.
